Reverent Stanton Tate was born on December 5, 1932 in Boise, Idaho to John and Marjorie Tate. He grew up in Boise on his family's dairy farm. He received a B.A. from the University of Idaho in 1955, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1958, was ordained as an Episcopalian priest in 1962, and received a Doctor of Ministry in 1988 from the San Francisco Theological Seminary. While in Princeton, he worked as a chaplain for the New Jersey State Prison, helping to secure the release of wrongfully incarcerated Bland and Eugene Williams. He also served as a chaplain to U.S. Forest Service smokejumpers in McCall. He served for five years as a probate judge in Valley County. From 1970-1974 he taught at Boise State College and served as coordinator of student relations. In 1974 he became the director of the Youth Alternatives Program. He was the chaplain at Oregon State University from 1978-1981, when he returned to Boise to become the rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Moscow. In 1988, he went to work as a bioethicist at Gritman Medical Center and stayed until 1999.
