         <p>Professor of literature, University of Washington.</p>
         <p>Edwin Harold Eby was born in 1900 in Los Angeles; he died in Seattle in 1994. He graduated from the Universtiy of Chicago and completed his doctorate at the Universtiy of Washington. Dr. Eby was considered the literary heir to Dr. Vern Parrington and completed Dr. Parrington's third volume of the Pulitzer Prize winning "Main Currents in American Thought" after Dr. Parrington's death. He taught more than 40 years at UW and was selected to professor emeritus. The Eby family included Simon P. Eby who became an attorney in 1858 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was also an active forest conservationist.</p>

               <p>Included is a reminiscence by Vernon Louis Parrington, Feb 1918, items related to Parrington, and a manuscript by Dr. Eby on Walt Whitman. Also, many items relate to the conservation efforts of Simon Eby.</p>
