The Jo-Anne Ely papers (1949-1977) contain correspondence, news clippings, interview transcripts, maps, reports, and published material relating to Charles A. "Charlie" Steen, the "Uranium King," and uranium mining in Utah. Ely was researching a possible biography of Steen.

Calvin Black was interviewed by Milan Pavlovich and Jeffrey Jones as part of the joint University of Utah--California State at Fullerton Uranium Oral History Project. Black (b. 1929) was a miner, ore hauler, and prospector. He details his childhood and schooling before recalling life in the uranium fields.
JoAnne Ely interviewed Rod Dixon, a Salt Lake attorney, at his apartment. The subject was Charlie Steen.
Ely interviewed Melich, Charlie Steen's lawyer and friend, in Salt Lake City. Also included in the file are photocopies of correspondence between William T. Hudson and Charlie Steen, a publications list put out by the Utah Geological Survey, and a copy of a legal document relative to the bankruptcy proceedings of Charles A. Steen.
Phillips discusses his long-time association with Charlie Steen, who was one of the first clients of his public relations firm. The folder contains two drafts, one with Phillips's corrections, the other with Ely's.
Newspaper columnist Dan Valentine gives JoAnne Ely his views on Charlie Steen, being a Republican, his foray into uranium stocks, and life in general.
Waddingham discusses his friendship with Charlie Steen, dating from their association as fellow freshman Utah state senators.
