Finding aid updated October 2024. New accessions from the Office of the President: Mixed collection (which will no longer exist once the administrations are transferred to the correct collections) were added in this round of processing by processing archivist Juliana Clark. There were 20 folders of materials that were processed into this collection and added into Box 2, and a Box 3 was created. Some of the folders were condensed to save folder supplies. The specific actions taken during processing can be referenced in the UA 001_003 processing plan and processing survey.

From 1899 to 1902, he served as the third president of the University of Oregon. He worked to make the UO live up to his belief that a university should be a citizen of its state. Gaining approval from the regents to create departments with deans, he brought outstanding individuals to the faculty, devised a plan for accrediting high schools in the state and admitting their students to the university, and improved the library. In spite of disagreements with the regents over a teacher education program, which led to his resignation. He left the UO and accepted the position of Chancellor of the University of Kansas in 1902.
