Biographical Note:

Mattie Avery graduated from Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) in 1892.
The granddaughter of Corvallis pioneer, Joseph C. Avery, Mattie was born in
Paisley, Oregon, in 1873 and apparently attended St. Mary's Academy in Portland
before enrolling at OAC.

Avery married John Fulton in 1897 and lived in Corvallis until her death
in 1962 while visiting in California. John Fulton, also an 1892 graduate of
OAC, was a professor of chemistry at Oregon State from 1892 until his
retirement in 1940. Fulton was an avid photographer and the OSU Archives
photographic collections include many images attributed to him. It is not known
if he made any of the photographs in this album.

The Mattie C. Avery Photograph Album consists of photograph prints
assembled by Mattie Avery. The title page is inscribed "Mattie C. Avery, St.
Mary's Academy, Portland, Oregon; June 10, 1887". The images represent a wide
range of subjects and most are not identified. Subjects depicted in the
photographs include views of buildings in Scotland and England; Arlington,
Virginia and Mount Vernon; a military camp; a geyser and waterfall (likely at
Yellowstone National Park); Celilo Falls and other views of the Columbia River
Gorge; and two images of Oregon Agricultural College buildings.

The Oregon Agricultural College photographs include an image of the
original Corvallis College building in downtown Corvallis and a view of the
original Mechanical Hall on the site of the current campus. This image also
includes Alpha Hall in the background and a garden of the college farm in the
foreground.
