Historical Note:

Oregon State University established the Marine Science Center in
Newport, Oregon, in 1965 as a marine laboratory. In 1983, the Marine Science
Center was officially re-named as the Hatfield Marine Science Center for Oregon
Governor and U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield. The Center serves as Oregon State
University's campus for research, education, and outreach in marine and coastal
 sciences.

The Totem buoy was an OSU Department of Oceanography project to
construct a 30-ton 194-foot research buoy. The Totem was towed to sea in a
horizontal position, forced to a vertical position, and used for oceanographic
 research.

Earth and Sea Investigators (EASI) was a science education enrichment
program for middle school students in rural and isolated schools. The program
included interactive satellite broadcasts, computer conferencing, and hands-on
activities. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the program was based
at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.

Captain R. Barry Fisher was a commercial fisherman on the east coast of the United States who was recruited by Oregon State University in 1969 to teach commercial fisheries and develop processes and equipment for use in Oregon fisheries. He left Oregon State in 1974 to return to commercial fishing, but continued to be instrumental in fisheries education and research in Oregon until his death in 2001. Ellen K. Pikitch was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University from 1983 to 1987.

The Hatfield Marine Science Center Videotapes consists of 12 VHS
videotapes documenting the Center's research and public outreach programs. The tapes include a video transfer of a color, silent motion picture film of the construction and launch of the Totem buoy; a feature segment about the Center broadcast by KATU-TV in Portland, Oregon; and productions that provide general information about the Center. The collection
also includes two videotapes produced by the Earth and Sea Investigators
Program in 1994 and a 1997 production by Oregon Public Broadcasting on fishing in Oregon. A recording of the dedication of the Guin Library in 1990 includes speeches by John V. Byrne, Mark O. Hatfield, Janet Webster, and other Center administrators and staff. In an extensive interview by Ellen Pikitsch in 1987, Captain R. Barry Fisher provides information about his personal background and experiences as well as commercial fishing.
