      <head>Historical Note:</head>
      <p>The Corvallis Engine Company No. 1 was established on June 18, 1872 at a
		  meeting at Fisher's Hall. The name of the company was changed later that year
		  to Young America Engine Company No. 1. The organization appears to have had a
		  social and benevolent function in addition to its fire fighting duties. The
		  company was voluntary; members paid an initiation fee and dues at each
		  meeting.</p>

      <p>Ledger book consists of the organization's constitutions, by-laws, rules
		  of order, membership lists, and meeting minutes (1872-1880). A certificate of
		  membership in the Young America Engine Co. No. 1 of the Corvallis Fire
		  Department is also included in the collection. Minutes describe the various
		  activities that the company engaged in.</p>
