      <p>The Links, Inc., a not-for-profit service and civic organization focused on enriching the quality of life in the African American community, was founded by Margaret Rosell Hawkins and Sarah Strickland Scott in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1946. The Portland chapter was established in 1957 with 10 charter members; its first president was Kathryn Bogle.</p>

      <p>Small collection consisting of photographs, most in color, that were used on an informational panel about the Portland chapter of The Links, Inc., a women's service organization devoted to the African American community. The panel was displayed in a 1988 Northwest Black Heritage exhibit at the Oregon Historical Society. The photographs depict members and activities of the group, including an arts festival at the YWCA, 1959, and a multicultural festival in 1980. The collection includes a photograph of the original panel, which also featured information about the founding, history, and activities of the organization.</p>
