The Alaska-Gastineau Mining Company (1911-1934) was established in
1911 to mine gold at the Alaska-Gastineau Mine, one of the largest mines in the
world at the time. This mine was located four miles from Juneau, Alaska in the
Silver Bow Basin and processed its ore at Sheep Creek. The company originally
began under Joseph Gilbert who started a company named the Alaska Perseverance
Mining Co. in 1907, but it was reorganized and branded with its new name in
1911. Charles Hayden was the company president, and Bartlett L. Thane was the
managing director who introduced hydroelectric power to Juneau. The mines and
mills required around 6,000 horsepower of electricity to operate, and were
assisted by the company’s construction of the Salmon Creek Dam built in 1912
and also the Annex Creek plant completed in 1916. By 1915, four thousand tons
of ore were being crushed daily. In 1934 the Alaska Juneau Mining Company
bought the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Company’s properties and assets.
