Biographical Note

Hazel Gertrude Kinscella was born in 1893 in Iowa. She moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1908 and studied with Robert W. Stevens at the University School of Music. She graduated in 1916 and served as a faculty member for several years. Kinscell received her B.A. from the University of Nebraska in 1928, M.A. from Columbia University, and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. In 1938 Kinscella left Lincoln and taught piano at the University of Washington until 1958. During the summers, she taught course at the Julliard School of Music. She originated the Kinscella Plan for piano instruction in 1919, one of the first American experiments in state school piano teaching that became popular nationwide and in some foreign countries. She also published more than 100 articles, one series of six books, and five books, including Music on the Air (Viking, 1934), a 500-page reference for all listeners of music on radio. Hazel Kinscella died in 1960.
