The Richard Foster Papers include manuscripts, writings, research materials, schedules of speaking engagements, interviews, invitations, calendars, brochures, correspondence, photographs, recordings, and media from Foster’s writing and speaking career. The bulk of these materials are records from his many speaking engagements both domestic and abroad. These materials tell about his speaking career, writing process, development of ideas, and teaching. They give insight into the character and mind of Foster as he developed some of his most famous works, spoke all over the world in churches, colleges, and universities, taught and counseled others. Some of the collection is from his time as a professor at Azusa Pacific University. This collection is especially useful for research on the life and theology of Richard Foster.

Biographical Note

Richard J. Foster is the author of several spiritual books which have appealed to a wide audience since his 1978 publication of The Celebration of Discipline. Although he is ecumenical in focus, his works often reflect Quaker precepts that are described as an attempt to “promote a balanced understanding of the Christian faith.” Foster is the founder of Renovare Spiritual Formation Institute. He has been a frequent speaker in conferences around the world. He is a former pastor of a Quaker congregation that is part of the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Church (NWYM) and, as a graduate of George Fox College, Newberg, Oregon, he has chosen to house his papers at the combined archives of the University and the NWYM.
