      <head>Historical Note</head>
      <p>The Torch is an independent student-produced newspaper, first
		  published on November 1, 1965, shortly after the school opened for the first
		  time in the Fall 1965. It was a publication of the Associated Students of Lane
		  Community College and currently operates under the auspices of Media Arts as
		  part of the Arts Division and the authority of the college’s Media Commission.
		  </p>
      <p>The Torch is published weekly on Thursdays during the academic year,
		  September to May.</p>
      <p>The Torch serves three purposes: to provide news and information for
		  the Lane community; to serve as a learning laboratory for students of
		  journalism, graphic arts, photography, publishing, and advertising; and to
		  provide a channel for student commentary and debate.</p>
      <p>The Torch is it is an autonomous newspaper free from censorship by the
		  college administration, faculty, and student government.</p>

      <p>The Torch is the student newspaper containing news and information for
		  the LCC community. The weekly newspaper contains articles and photographs in
		  sections on campus news, student life, opinion, and sports.</p>
