The Green River, located in the western United States, is the chief tributary of the Colorado River. The watershed of the river, known as the Green River Basin, covers parts of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. The Green River is 730 miles (1,170 km) long, beginning in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming and flowing through Wyoming and Utah for most of its course, except for 40 miles (64 km) into western Colorado

John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 – September 23, 1902) was a U.S. soldier, geologist, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois State University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. He is famous for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers that included the first known passage through the Grand Canyon.

Explanatory narration, adventurous orchestral music and direct readings from Powell's diary aid diverse visuals featuring a mix of landscape photography, animation, and Powell's own drawings. As the film recounts Powell's struggles against both nature and the uncertainty of his own crew whilst traveling down the river, various geological features of the Grand Canyon and the history of their formation are highlighted. The film culminates with a celebratory reminder of Powell's notable legacy
