Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Bonnie Jean Taylor was the Manager of Landscape Grounds Operations at the University of Washington. She began her career at the University of Washington in the 1970s, where she first started to work as an office assistant. She later worked as a custodian, which paid better than the office position and allowed Taylor more autonomy and responsibilities. From there, Taylor took a position as a gardener on campus.

As a gardener, Taylor soon noticed that white men on staff had more power and opportunities than minority and women gardeners. As the union shop steward, she began to document the complaints raised by employees. On two occasions, when Taylor was not selected for supervisory positions in favor of other candidates with less experience, Taylor filed grievances with her union, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Staff Human Rights Office, and the Washington State Human Rights Commission. In both instances, findings supported Taylor.
