Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in California and raised in the midwest, Lory Maurice Johnston attended Oregon State College from 1947 to 1950. Majoring in business, Johnston left OSC without finishing his degree to enlist in the U.S. Navy and went on serve as a pilot during the Korean War. When he returned to the U.S., Johnston continued his education at Cornell University where he studied hotel and restaurant management. With this training, he went on to help his father Wilson manage the Elbo Room Bar and Sea Breeze Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Elbo Room was the hub of the spring break culture that began to form in the 1950s and the bar was immortalized in the 1960 novel (and later a film of the same title) "Where The Boys Are." Johnston inherited the bar from his father and continued to run it as a family business. He also managed other restaurants in the area such as Trader Jack's and Maori Village. He died in 2006.
