Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Pantages Theatre was one of the many vaudeville theaters throughout the western United States and Canada run by Greek-American Alexander Pantages (1867-1936). The Pantages Theatre in Portland opened in a 1,400 seat building on the corner of 7th Avenue (now Broadway) and Alder Street built by the architect Emil Schact. In 1926, the theatre became a movie house; meanwhile the Pantages circuit acquired the Hippodrome Theatre at Broadway and Yamhill, which was later re-named the Orpheum. The theater at Broadway and Alder closed in 1928, and the building was demolished and replaced with Fred Meyer's Alderway Building.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The collection consists of photographs of vaudeville performers who appeared at the Pantages Theatre in Portland, collected by the theater's stage manager, H. P. Emery. Most of the images include the performers' autographs.
In addition to the photographs of performers, there photographs of the theater's stage hands, two copies of a cartoon of Hickey and Nelson's "Twisted and Tangled," and the February 1915 form appointing H. P. Emery special deputy of the theater.
Other Descriptive InformationReturn to Top
Some of the collection's photographs predate the Pantages Theatre's opening, indicating that Emery was involved with theater beforehand.
