Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Joel Hoskins Child was born April 1, 1840 in Athens County, Ohio. His family moved first to Illinois and then settled in Utah, removing to Moroni, Utah in 1859. Mr. Child purchased a 95-acre sheep farm in Chester, Sanpete County, Utah in 1876, later serving as Justice of the Peace. Joel H. Child also served as a drummer in the Utah Territorial Army. He married Swedish immigrant Cherste (Christy) Olson in 1866 and they had thirteen children, ten of whom survived into adulthood. Joel H. Child died on January 21, 1912 in Chester, Utah.

Poems of Joel H. Child about Utah and on patriotic or political themes and a poem about Mount Pleasant, Ohio. The scrapbook also includes short essays, published letters pertaining to local events, and home remedies for blood poisoning and scarlet fever.
The scrapbook also included loose pages (both clippings and handwritten notes), which have been moved into a separate folder.
