Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Regina Amira (née Barkey) was born in 1932 on the Island of Rhodes and later in her childhood lived as a Jewish refugee in Tangier, Morocco. In 1946 she immigrated with her family to Seattle where they lived and worked, attended school and synagogue, and where she later met her husband, Victor. When her children were young, she worked for a short time as a secretary at King County Medical Service. She went on to have a thirty-year secretarial career with Garfield High School and was involved in several Jewish community organizations.

Oral history interview of Regina Amira conducted by Susan Weingarten and Ruth Sassoon on September 21, 2018. In this interview, Amira tells of her family background and her childhood in the Island of Rhodes until the age of seven; the transition to life as a refugee in Morocco before coming to the United States after World War II; her impressions of Seattle and her new life in this country; meeting her husband Victor and a California sojourn as a serviceman's wife; her position working at King County Medical and a long-time career at Garfield High School; activities at Ezra Bessaroth, Sephardic Bikur Holim Sisterhood, and Mizrachi Women; teaching Sephardic cooking; enjoying her children and grandchildren; and counting her blessings.
