Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Karen Morell holds a Ph.D. and Master's in Comparative Literature from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Arts in English. She taught African Literature at the University of Washington, produced the African Encounters video series, and served on the African Studies Faculty Committee. The University published her collection of edited transcripts from the 1973 African Studies Seminar in the book In Person: Achebe, Soyinka, and Awoonor. She produced documentaries from film that were included in the Saint Louis Art Museum and Smithsonian's Festival Arts of the Caribbean. These programs are part of the Alan Lomax collection in the Library of Congress. She served on the African and Caribbean Committee of the Seattle Art Museum.

This film was originally shot with Super8 film (audio recorded separately) by Dr. Arthur France (University of Washington School of Communications and KCTS) as part of "How to Preserve and Teach Native American Traditions," a project of the UW Office of Minority Affairs, directed by Dr. Karen Morell (funded by the Washington Commission for the Humanities), 1976-1977.

The indoor footage was filmed in the Swinomish community center. The group, primarily elders, met regularly in discussion and decision-making sessions. The elders decided what materials would be filmed and who would be speaking. Nancy Wilbur facilitated these sessions.

2014-1.1 EC (U-matic tape) and 2014-1.1 WD (NO SOUND) (appears to be portion of footage shot during project) - 0:00-3:07 - conversation indoors; those present include Agnes Charles, Ray Charles (Sauk-Suiattle), Moris Dan, Laura Edwards, Elmer Klein, Karen Morell (holding microphone), Nancy Wilbur, Helen ?, and others Karen Morell was not able to identify; 3:08-8:49 - outdoor burial of bones discovered at or near the Whidbey Naval Air Station and transferred to Swinomish for burial; those present include Moris Dan. (Total duration = 8:49)

2014-1.2 WD (NO SOUND) - Completed film, titled "The Swinomish Story," with additional opening titles - "With consultation and advice from the Swinomish Elders," "Filmmakers: Art France / Karen Morell," "Producer: Karen Morell" - includes shots of land, shoreline, water, Swinomish fishing, digging clams, elders with kids in classroom and outdoors, etc. (Total duration = 22:06)

Two additional .mov files received from Karen Morell in 2013 - M1-Reel1_Super8.mp4 (same contents as 2014-1.1 WD) and M2_S3_SwinomishStory.mp4 (complete film); from the latter, a .mov file was produced - Swinomish_Story_silent.mov - and then a work disc - 2014-1.2 WD.
