The Preventive Medicine Residency Program was first accredited in 1961 and was originally administered by the Department of Preventive Medicine in the School of Medicine. In 1970, the School of Public Health and Community Medicine was created and assumed administrative responsibilities for the residency program. The program consists of an academic year leading to a master of public health degree followed by a one-year practicum.

Files document the administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant to establish a Preventive Residency Training program. Gary M. Goldbaum served as the principle investigator and supervised the two year program designed to offer minority residents the opportunity to focus on resident work in the area of health promotion and disease prevention. The grant was administered between 1992 and 2002.
