Historical NoteReturn to Top

Alanson "Lant" Hinman worked at the Forest Grove Indian Training School in the early 1880s. He was the son of Alanson Hinman Sr., one of the founders of Pacific University.

The Forest Grove Indian Training School was a boarding school for Native American children, who were taken from their families and given vocational training in trades such as farming and shoemaking. The children came from many tribes, most of which were in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The Indian Training school functioned with support from (but not under the direct administration of) Pacific University from 1880-1885. In 1885, it moved to a location near Salem and was renamed the "Chemawa Indian School."
