Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in 1915 in Tambasan Sang, Gambia, into a large family of griots from Brikama, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh (pronounced Amadou Bansan Diabate) was one of the most respected and influential kora players in his country and beyond. This great master of the 21-string Mandingo harp-lute first became famous in the 1940s, and spread the traditional repertoire of Mandingo kora music in all the countries of the former Mandingo empire for decades. Amadou Bansang Jobarteh died on April 8, 2001 at his home in Gambia.\
