Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Veazie Wilson, born in Cherryfield, Maine in 1865, was an amateur photographer who documented the Fort Wrangell and Juneau area as well as the Yukon Territory in Canada. Wilson’s goal was to create a guidebook to attract potential miners to the Alaska region. The photographer died of typhoid fever in 1895, prior to the publication of his book. The book,Esther Lyon's Glimpses of Alaska: A Collection of Views of the Interior of Alaska and the Klondike District from Photographs by Veazie Wilson, was published in 1897 by Rand McNally and was compiled by Esther Lyons, who supposedly accompanied Wilson during his documentation of Alaska and the Yukon.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The Klondike Gold Rush officially began in 1896 when Skookum Jim Mason’s party struck gold in Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek. Miners rushed to Alaska in 1897 after some of the first successful prospectors arrived in Seattle. The town of Wrangell was used by prospectors traveling up the Stikine River to mine for gold. Wrangell soon became crowded because the town was advertised as the easiest route to the Klondike.

Esther Lyon's Glimpses of Alaska: A Collection of Views of the Interior of Alaska and the Klondike District from Photographs by Veazie Wilsonwas one of many photographic travel albums produced about the Klondike.
