Historical NoteReturn to Top

On September 19, 1926, western resort owners of Montana and Wyoming held a two day convention in Bozeman, Montana, to officially set up an organization called The Dude Ranchers Association. The association determined to promote a national interest in mountain resorts and dude ranches and made proposals for a nationwide campaign to attract tourists.

The Northern Pacific Railroad sponsored the conference in hopes of establishing rapport between resort owners and railroad officials. The railroad anticipated an active participation in the transporting of patrons from the east to the "dude ranch country."

By 1971, the association had 800 associate members and 43 dude ranches in Wyoming and Montana actively participating. The association produced a quarterly magazine, Dude Rancher, from 1937 to 1971. In 1971 members of the association decided to publish an annual recreation guide, The Montana Outfitters and Dude Ranch Annual, which replaced the Dude Rancher.

The Dude Ranchers Association was highly active in conservation issues dealing with legislative issues which may have an adverse effect or no adverse effect on land. Organizations they worked closely with included the National Park Service, National Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers, and Bureau of Reclamation. The Association was also concerned with Montana tourism, working with major railroad companies such as Northern Pacific and major airlines. The association was active in the promotion of their association, and economic issues.
