Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Gregory N. Short was a composer, pianist and educator. He was born on August 14, 1938 on the Yakima Indian Reservation in the city of Toppenish, Washington. Short is known for his blending of classical European-American styles of music with American-Indian melodies. He earned a doctorate in musical composition and theory from the University of Oregon. In addition to creating over 300 compositions, Short taught at private and public schools in the state of Washington. He also created the 1968-1969 television series “The American Composer,” which featured the music of Northwest composers. He died in Freeland, Washington on April 1, 1999.
