Herbert Congdon (1876-1965) was educated at Columbia University and became a junior partner in his father's architectural firm that specialized in the design and furnishing of Episcopal churches. Congdon became an architect and author.

The collection consists of an autobiography, manuscripts, correspondence, drawings, plans and photographs of churches and ecclesiastical furniture.
The correspondence series, 1934-1961, is organized alphabetically by the person or organizational name, and each entry includes incoming and outgoing letters.
The book length manuscript series is organized by subject and files include correspondence, drafts, research and final versions. This series also includes an autobiography.
The drawings series is organized alphabetically by project and contains church drawings.
The photograph series is organized alphabetically by subject.
1974 Addenda contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, (1924-1964), photographs and glass negatives, architectural drawings and plans organized alphabetically by project title, tearsheets and publications.
