Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Kathryn Anderson completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Iowa, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 (Honors thesis: “Eleanor Roosevelt’s Persuasive Contributions to the New Deal”), and a Master of Arts in Speech in 1967 (thesis: “Some Communication Characteristics of Opinion Leaders”). She obtained a Ph.D. in Speech Communication from the University of Washington in 1978 (dissertation: “Practical Political Equality for Women: Anne Martin’s Campaigns for the U.S. Senate in Nevada, 1918 and 1920”).

Anderson joined the faculty of Fairhaven College at Western Washington University (WWU) in 1972, and became founding director of the Women Studies program in 1977. She attained full Professorship at WWU in 1994, and was awarded Professor Emeritus standing upon her retirement in 2012. She also served as Acting Assistant Dean for Fairhaven College from 1992-1993. Her scholarly research focused primarily on women in politics, women’s rights, and gender equality in America, and she was active in promoting these issues at numerous conferences and speaking engagements throughout her career.

Anderson utilized her research skills and expertise in conducting oral history interviews to author several publications on influential American women politicians, and she contributed significantly to the Western Washington University Centennial Project by interviewing and writing about the experiences of women faculty and their contributions to the institution. She served on several committees at the university, and also teamed up with organizations and special interest groups in the community and throughout the region to draw awareness to women’s contributions to society, support the empowerment of women, and offer resources to improve the lives of women (such as the Coalition for Western Women’s History/Women of Whatcom County).

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Professional papers are comprised of materials documenting Anderson’s interest in Women Studies, her position as a professor at Fairhaven College, her involvement in community activities, and her communications with friends and colleagues at other institutions. The papers include employment documentation, publications, conference documents, correspondence, newspaper clippings, curriculum notes and syllabi, teaching items, photographic slides, oral histories, student work, and audio-visual materials.

Research materials were generated from Anderson’s extensive study of issues related to women’s suffrage and participation in politics. There is a particular focus on the lives and political contributions of Anne Martin, Jeannette Rankin, and Emily Newell Blair as documented through correspondence, research notes, newspaper clippings, publications and manuscripts, academic writings, biographical materials, and audio-visual materials.
