- Helen Faick was a former University of Montana student and graduate of Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts who went on to design greeting cards and wrapping paper, and owned her own company. This collection contains a sampling of greeting cards and wrapping paper Faick created as well as correspondence she maintained with University of Montana professor H.G. Merriam.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Helen Katharine Faick was born on February 14, 1903 in Montana. The oldest of Conrad and Margaret Faick's four children, she went on to attend the University of Montana in Missoula from 1920 to 1923. In 1923, she received a scholarship to Radcliffe College and graduated with an art degree in 1926. She then taught art at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts for two years. Faick eventually moved to New York City and designed greeting cards and wrapping paper for different companies. She would eventually own her own company.
Helen Faick moved to Oregon in 1951 and worked as the graphic artist for the Oregon State System of Higher Education for twelve years. She died on April 23, 1983 in Benton County, Oregon.

This collection contains Christmas cards designed and illustrated by Helen Faick during her time in New York City, from 1936 to 1937, as well as an album that includes her art from throughout her career. The album was likely assembled by Helen Faick's sister, Frances Faick Walker. This collection also contains correspondence exchanged between Helen Faick and University of Montana English professor Harold G. Merriam and his family between 1966 and 1980. There is also a single letter between Helen Faick and Joran B. Paullin discussing the Merriams.

Custodial History
The University of Montana President's Office transferred the first accession of this collection to Archives and Special Collections in 1984. In 2015, the scrapbook containing Faick's work was donated to Archives and Special Collections by the Montana Museum of Art and Culture along with some personal papers belonging to Helen Faick's sister, Frances Faick Walker.
