Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Anita Rubenstein (1909-1999) was born to Ukrainian immigrants Michael and Ida Rubenstein in San Francisco, California. The Rubensteins lived in St. Louis, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Chicago, Juneau, and Seattle before settling to raise chickens in Home Colony, Washington. They returned to Seattle in 1922, where Anita attended Lincoln High School and the University of Washington. In 1927 she became a charter member of Kappa Zeta, the first Jewish sorority at the University of Washington. She married George Snyder in 1932.

Tape recorded interview conducted by Meta Kaplan and Karyl Winn on 27 April 1971 and covering the years 1895-1940.

Mrs. Synder describes her father's life and her own childhood at Home, Wash., as well as many of the settlers at Home and their children. She also describes her childhood in Seattle and in Alaska. Included is an account of the establishment of Kappa Zeta, the first Jewish sorority at the University of Washington.
