Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Theodore C. Ruch was born May 22, 1906 in Gutherie Center, Iowa. He received his B.A. at the University of Oregon in 1927 (psychology), his M.A. at Stanford University in 1928 (psychology), a B.A. (1930) and B.Sc. (1932) from Oxford University in physiology, and a Ph.D. in physiology from Yale University in 1933. From 1933 to 1946, he was an instructor and later an assistant professor in Physiology at Yale. In 1946, Ruch came to the University of Washington as the founding chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the School of Medicine. He served as chair until 1964, and remained as a professor in the department until 1976. In 1961, Ruch became the founding director of the Regional Primate Research Center at the University of Washington, a position he held until 1971. Theodore Ruch died in 1983.
