Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Deborah Kerdeman was a professor of education in the University of Washington College of Education with a specialty in the philosophy of education. Kerdeman received a B.A. from Pitzer College in 1975; an M.A. in Jewish Education from Hebrew Union College in 1981; an M.Ed. in Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education from the University of Southern California in 1981; an M.A. in Religious Studies from Stanford University in 1988; and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Philosophy of Education in 1991. She joined the faculty of the University of Washington College of Education in 1991 as an assistant professor, later becoming associate professor in 1997 and full professor in 2015. She also served on the faculty of the University of Washington Stroum Center for Jewish Studies, Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies starting in 1997. Kerdeman retired from the University of Washington in 2019.

Kerdeman's research focuses on hermeneutics: the philosophy of interpretation and understanding. Her published work examines the implications of hermeneutic self-understanding for teaching, learning, educational policy, and the humanities. She has also investigated similarities and differences between hermeneutic self-understanding and the learning sciences and has compared hermeneutics and post-positivist philosophy of science.
