Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Russian Orthodox Greek Church of Christ's Resurrection was located in Cle Elum, Washington. In 1916, the church purchased the Methodist Church located on the corner of 2nd Street and Montgomery Avenue, as well as a 6-room wooden house located next door. Father Alexander Vyacheslavov and Father Poplavsky were priests at the church.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Photocopies of reports, correspondence, and meeting minutes primarily related to the purchase, construction, and operations of the Russian Orthodox Greek Church of Christ's Resurrection in Cle Elum, Washington. Most of the records are in Russian; three letters are in English. In much of the correspondence, Father Alexander Vyacheslavov provides information about the church to the Archbishop of the Aleutians and North America, Evdokim. In particular, Father Vyacheslavov discusses financing the church, insurance, the purchase of the church building, and construction plans. He also describes the church's need for a permanent priest--or at least a priest who can travel to Cle Elum from Seattle at least once a month--as Father Vyacheslavov was the priest of St. Spiridon Church in Seattle. The records also discuss the activities of a charity bazaar, the women's committee, and visitors from Russia, and include letters in English from Cle Elum attorney Robert A. Wilson to Rev. Poplavsky and Archbishop Evdokim regarding the mortgage for the church. Some of the correspondence appears out of order, or is composed of fragments with missing pages. Much of the handwriting is in an archaic style reminiscent of the 18th century, and some correspondence contains grammatical errors and misspellings.
