Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Between 1916 and 1924 the University of Washington was still recovering from the effects of World War I. As male students returned to school from the battlefields, the University found its student population stretched to the breaking point. At the same time, the University suffered from a severe lack of funds. Teacher salaries were prohibitively low and President Suzzallo found himself battling with the state government for the money to build badly needed extensions to the University.

Written on photo: "A Few Distinguished Guests, Campus Day"Campus Day began in April 1904 under the direction of Edmond
Meany. Originally, Campus Day was used as a work day in which both students and
faculty participated in the physical work that needed to be done around campus.
Over the years, the practical work aspect of the day diminished. Lunch, special
guests and sporting events were all part of Campus Day in 1922.
