Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Seattle businessman Joseph Arthur Baillargeon (1856-1936) was born in Canada and immigrated to the United States in 1867 at the age of 11, entering at Port Huron, Michigan. He lived in Seattle from 1883 until his death in 1936, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1884. He owned a dry-goods business, married Abby Collins, daughter of Seattle’s first mayor, and had five children.

His son Cebert Baillargeon (1888-1964) was born Joseph Cebert and served as a Navy Lieutenant based in London during World War I, and has a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 as an aide to Col. Edward M. House, the personal representative of President Woodrow Wilson. He married Katherine Agen (1901-1991) in 1923; they had five children. Cebert began his own investment-banking business in Seattle with Kenelm Winslow. In 1929, the partners acquired the Seattle Trust company, which later became the Seattle Trust and Savings Bank. He served as president of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, the China Club, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and the Board of Trustees of the Lakeside School. He also served as a board member of the World Affairs Council and as a director of King Broadcasting Company.
