Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jaap Kunst (1891-1960) was an ethnomusicologist and writer from Groningen, the Netherlands. He is known for his study of the gamelan music of Indonesia and for coining the term ethnomusicology, which replaced the then-preferred term "comparative musicology". Both of his parents were musicians and began studying music from a young age. In the 1920s, he toured Indonesia (which was then part of the Dutch East Indies) and created an archive of musical instruments, field recordings, books, and photographs. In 1936, he returned to the Netherlands and became the curator of the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Full title: Music from Moluccas, Western Sumba, Manuboko, and Flores.

Contents: Side 1 of the original tape contains songs recorded by Haboe (?) from the Moluccas; side 2 begins with songs from the Moluccas, Manuboko, and Bandaela (also rec. by Haboe); side 2 continues with recordings made on wax cylinder by Jaap Kunst (1929) in Banda (Gong Sembilan), Western Sumba, and Flores (Nada mourning and work songs) (info. from tape box and spoken announcements; also see logsheets)

Performers: English announcements by unidentified speaker; Dutch announcements by Jaap Kunst.

Recording speed of Haboe's originals is unknown, but on UW copy speed of song items seems incorrect (though announcements sound ok)

Tape was one of "mystery tapes" in archives; probably received with OF 17 Sumba/89-6.1 EC, which also contains material from the Ethnomusicological Archives at the University of Amsterdam.

Announcement at beginning of tape: "From Ethnomusicological Archives, University of Amsterdam, to School of Music Archives of Ethnic Music and Dance of the University of Washington, Seattle. The following are dubbing of, probably, disc recordings made in the 40s by Mr. Jay Haboe (sp.?) and dubbed on tape in Amsterdam. Contents: traditional music from the Moluccas. The pieces are announced in Dutch by Jaap Kunst. Our reference number - C43."

WD was recorded from 89-5.1 EC (both sides) 4/2004.

Durations: EC (58:17); WT (29:26, 28:51); WD (50:23).

Documentation: Photo-copy of back of tape box
