Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Alan Lomax (1915-2002) was an ethnomusicologist, film-maker, musician, scholar, and political activist, from Austin, Texas. He is best known for his field recordings of folk music from 20th century United States and Europe. In the 1950s, he created an 18-volume LP series anthologizing folk music from around the world. He served as director of the Archive of Folk Culture, which was originally part of the Library of Congress, but today resides in the American Folklife Center. He received the National Medal of Arts from President Regan in 1984, and he was made a Library of Congress Living Legend in 2000.
