Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dumisani "Dumi" Maraire (1944-1999) was a mbira player and teacher from Mutare, Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe). He learned to play the mbira from his family members and later studied at the college of music in Bulawayo. He taught at the University of Washington, Seattle from 1968-1972. From 1972-1982, he taught at Evergreen State College, taught music lessons, and performed mbira throughout the Pacific Northwest. In 1982, he returned to Zimbabwe to start an ethnomusicology program at the University of Zimbabwe before returning to the University of Washington to earn his doctorate in ethnomusicology. After earning his doctorate, he returned again to the University of Zimbabwe.
