James R. Irwin enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and served as a captain of a C-47 transport airplane. Later he worked as a captain with the Pennsylvania Central Airlines, Capital Airlines, U.S. Steel and United Airlines. He retired with over 30,000 flying hours.
