A selection of digitized content from the larger original journal of James Sharpe Emerson. The original journal was written between 1900-1910, and these digitized extracts date from 1900-1903 (covering the years approximately 1884-1903). A transcript of the extracts is available in-house.

Emerson writes about his emigration to Ellsworth, Kansas from Ireland, then to the Pacific Northwest where he settled in Fairhaven, Washington and started in the real estate business that he later moved to Whatcom.

In 1899 he moved to Vancouver, BC where he prospered in logging/timber. Includes descriptions of his wife Jean, his children Jack and Margaret, his three sisters, and a detailed description of his mother Margaret, her life and death.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

James Sharpe Emerson (b. 1858, Ireland, d. 1921, Vancouver B.C.), was a lumber/timber businessman born near Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland. Emerson emigrated to the United States of America in 1884 as a young man, and first settled in Ellsworth, Kansas with his mother, Margaret, and three sisters, Isabelle (Belle), Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Annie (Nannie).

In Ellsworth, he and his mother bought a hotel, The American House, which he sold in 1887. In 1890 he traveled West and arriving in Fairhaven, Washington in April. His wife Jean and son John (Jack) joined him in July 1890 and his mother and three sisters arrived in April 1891. In May 1891 he moved his real estate business to Whatcom from Fairhaven but kept his residence in Fairhaven.

His daughter Margaret was born in June 1895. His mother died in April 1899 and in August 1899 he moved from Fairhaven to Vancouver, British Columbia where he undertook several business ventures, logging/timber being the most successful. He was a prosperous businessman.
