Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Tape-recored interview conducted by Thelma Sameth on February 28, 1987 and March 8, 1987. Accession also includes a writing (1939).
The first part of the interview is concerned with early family history. His grandfather, Mandel immigrated from Galicia in 1886 to Blue Island, Illinois where Mandel, his father, was born. After trying farming, his grandfather left for goldpanning in Alaska and ended up in Seattle. Bailey attended Seattle schools and the University Of Washington. He never graduated because of his involvement with a student organization on campus which opposed ROTC on campus. Although a pacifist he volunteered with the 91st Division (Pinetree) in World War II as an ambulance driver and was cited for bravery.
The second half of the interview concerns Bailey's early involvement with Zionist youth organizations which eventually led to his participation in the post World War II activities of Aliyah Bet, the clandestine operation which brought Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe to Mandate Palestine. He also talks about the founding of Seattle Committee for Israeli-Palestinian Peace.
Writing, "My Father's Education," is by Bailey Nieder.
