Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Magnolia Historical Society is a community organization dedicated to documenting and teaching the history of the Magnolia neighborhood in the city of Seattle. Its members researched and published a history of the area, Magnolia: Memories and Milestones, in 2000. A follow-up volume, Magnolia: Making More Memories, was released in 2007. The Society incorporated in 2001. In addition to researching Magnolia history for its book publications, the society produces teaching units, articles, and publications.

6.64 cubic feet (8 boxes)

Scope and Content: Organization records, project files, research files including 1929-2005, including minutes, correspondence, reports, clippings, newsletters, ephemera, research files; 1929-20025. Includes chapter drafts and photocopied photographs for the Society's history of Magnolia, Magnolia Memories and Milestones, 2000, together with sources used, especially records of Magnolia Community Club. Subject files include clippings, newsletters, project reports, minutes, survey forms, directories, photographs, and related materials documenting the community's efforts to address development issues regarding the Magnolia Bridge, Discovery Park, Magnolia Village, and the Triangle Parking Lot Condo Project. The papers include significant historical information and records gathered for an application for historical landmark status for a building originally built as the Children's Orthopedic Hospital Convalescent home. It was designed by Lionel Pries and William Bain in 1929. Another large group of records document the Magnolia Public Swimming Pool Project . In 1991, Metro (the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle) created a fund of money, later known as the Community Improvement Fund, as compensation for negative impacts caused by construction of the West Point sewage treatment plant. The following year, Magnolia residents voted to spend the funds on a neighborhood pool. The Magnolia Public Swimming Pool Project was established as a non-for-profit corporation in July 1992. The Lowery C. "Pop" Mounger Pool, named for a late Magnolia resident who had been active in local community affairs and was a noted supporter of youth recreation, held its grand opening on June 20, 1998.
