Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Edwin L. Chalcraft was born in 1855 near Albion, Illinois. From 1883-1925, Chalcraft worked for the Office of Indian Affairs and served as a superintendent in a number of Indian schools in Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. Chalcraft acted as the superintendent of the Chemawa Indian Training School, first from 1894-1895 and later from 1904-1912. From 1914-1925, Chalcraft worked at the Siletz Agency with Charles E. Larsen as his clerk. With his retirement in 1925, Chalcraft recommended the abolishment of the Siletz Agency, transferring the responsibilities of supervising the Siletz and Grand Ronde Reservations to the Superintendent of the Chemawa Training School.
