Biographical NoteReturn to Top

John R. Lucas was born in St. Louis, Missouri, around 1866. He moved to Montana in 1892 to become assistant superintendent of the Hope Mining Company's mine at Philipsburg. He became superintendent of the Granite-BiMetallic Consolidated Mining Company's operations in 1903, and continued in that capacity until his retirement due to poor health in 1916. As part of his duties, he managed the syndicate's other properties including the Henderson, Combination, Sapphire, Basin,and Hope mines. In 1897, Lucas married Madge Short. She died the following year after giving birth to their son, John J. Lucas. John R. Lucas was active in the Hellgate Lodge of the Elks, the Philipsburg Lodge of the Red Men, and the Knights of Columbus. Lucas died on April 15, 1917, in Long Beach, California.

Papers. 1903-1916. 2.5 linear feet. The John R. Lucas Papers consist primarily of his correspondence with Paul A. Fusz and Charles D. McLure of St. Louis concerning the operation of the Philipsburg mines. In addition there is considerable personal correspondence dealing with the Democratic Party and with the United Confederate Veterans.
