Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Organized 1897 as National Congress of Mothers; name changed in 1908 to National Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher Associations; in 1924 name changed to National Congress of Parents and Teachers. In 1970, when the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers merged with the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, the latter name was retained as the official name of the merged body and the name National PTA was adopted for common usage.
