Photographs of Seattle districts generated by members of University of Washington Architecture 201 class on the topic of "Urban Visual Elements". Each student was assigned a specific land use zone in a different part of the city; with the responsibility of reconnoitering the zone, discovering its particular typical patterns of use and physical form, and photographically documenting the visual essence of these patterns by means of one photograph for each category. The five categories are: typical public space (usually a street); typical space establishing element (usually a building facade, signs, fences, vegetation, utility poles); typical permanent furnishings (usually trees, utility poles, signs, hydrants, mail boxes, street lights, etc.); typical transient furnishings (usually vehicles, toys, equipment, merchandise, products, refuse); typical human occupants (shown in natural relationship with any of the above categories).

The collection consists of 2 series: Visual Elements Series (1963) and Man-made Environment Series (1973-1974). The Visual Elements Series covers a wide range of neighborhoods within Seattle city limits. The Man-made Environments Series focuses on Madison from Alaskan Way to Lake Washington. Also included are a set of photographs divided into subject categories: Street scenes, people, parks, residences (1952).
