Historical NoteReturn to Top

Funding for the needs of medical education was always an issue of acute concern. One of the best supporters of the University of Oregon Medical School was the noted physician and surgeon Andrew C. Smith (1856-1943). Born in Wisconsin (1856), he emigrated as a child with his family to Oregon (1864), where he got his primary education. Getting his M.D.at Cooper Medical College, San Francisco (1877), he served a stint in the US Army Medical Corps as an Asst. Surgeon (1877-80). After private practice in California (1880-88) he continued his medical education back East and abroad, before relocating for good to Portland(1891). Rapidly rising in the ranks of local physicians, he became President of the Portland Medical Society (1893), and later Pres. Oregon State Medical Society (1896). Later he entered politics and was elected state senator for Multnomah County (1900), at which point he supported the improvement of medical education in the state as a priority. It was his support on the Ways and Means Committee to finally get the funding needed for expansion of the medical school on Marquam Hill.
