Historical NoteReturn to Top

WWAMI is the UW School of Medicine’s multi-state medical education program established to address the shortage of primary care physicians in rural reas. The acronym, WWAMI, stands for the states served by the UW School of Medicine: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

It was established in 1971 between the State of Washington, the University of Washington and the states of Alaska, Montana, and Idaho as a community-based medical education program. Wyoming joined in 1996, expanding the program name from WAMI to WWAMI.

WWAMI supports a network of programs designed to alleviate the shortages of healthcare programs in rural and underserved urban areas. These programs include: WWAMI Area Health Education Center Network (AHEC), WWAMI Rural Health Research Center, Office of Rural Program, and the Center for Health Workforce Studies.

The WWAMI Center for Health Workforce Studies was established at the University of Washington in October 1998 with funding from the Bureau of Health Profession's National Center for Health Workforce Analysis. The Center is based in the Research Section of the Department of Family Medicine, part of the University of Washington School of Medicine. The Center conducts relevant health workforce research and policy analysis in collaboration with federal and state agencies; provides consultation to local, state, regional and national policy makers on health workforce issues; develops and refines analytical methods for measuring state health workforce supply and requirements; contributes to the understanding of health workforce issues and findings; and disseminates study results to a wide audience for application by policymakers.

The Center works in partnership with other WWAMI organizations and offices in Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, in addition to their particitpation with planning and studies in Utah and Nebraska.

Biographical/Historical Note: The WAMI program was begun in 1971 with a grant from the Commonwealth Foundation of New York City. It was conceived as an educational agreement between the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSoM) and the states of Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. The name "WAMI" is an acronym taken from the first letter of the four participating states. UWSoM serves as a regional medical school and as a catalyst for improving the sciences and medical care in the WAMI states. Students accepted into WAMI complete their first year of medical education at their designated state university and portions of their clinical experience in the WAMI region. The program is administered by the UW School of Medicine Office of the Dean.

Scope and Content: Correspondence, legislative files, proposal and grant files, state reports, grant reports, financial records and related materials; 1970-1995.

Restrictions on Access: Open to all users.

Restrictions on Use: Public Records (use unrestricted when access is granted)
