Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Herman Schocken was a leader at the Washington Emigre Bureau, helping to resettle refugees who had escaped Nazi Germany. Later, Schocken helped to form the Jewish Club of Washington, a philanthropic and social organization. He was born in 1869, in Germany. His family left Morgonin, Germany when he was young, and he arrived in Seattle in 1884.

Included are text of tribute, probably delivered as eulogy, in honor of Herman Schocken by Clara Nieder with whom he worked at the Washington Emigre Bureau. Clara Nieder was executive secretary of the organization. Photocopy of Schocken's 1933 passport.
