Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Gordon Marckworth (1895-1980) was a forester and Dean of the University of Washington College of Forestry from 1945 to 1965. He was appointed by Governor Langlie in 1941 as chairman of the Forest Advisory Committee, which reviewed forestry practices in the state of Washington and made recommendations, many of which were enacted into law. In 1953 the governor appointed Marckworth chairman of the Olympic National Park Review Committee to study the impact of the park on the state. He was also a member of the Quinault Study Committee appointed in 1961 by the Secretary of the Interior. Professor Marckworth was a member of the State Forest Board and of the Board of Natural Resources from 1957 to 1964. He was an active member of the Society of American Foresters and was elected a Fellow of the society, its highest honor, in 1955. He served at various times as chairman of its Gulf States, Southeastern, and Puget Sound sections, as Secretary of its Division of Education, and as a member of its National Council. Professor Marckworth was president of the Washington State Forestry Conference from 1944 to 1960 and technical director of the Institute of Forest Products from 1947 to 1957. He was also a trustee of the Keep Washington Green Association, the Washington State Conservation Association, and the University of Washington Arboretum Foundation.

Professor Marckworth received his degrees in forestry from Ohio State (B.S., 1916) and Yale (M.F., 1917). He worked as a forester in Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, and Maryland and taught at Louisiana State University and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty of the University of Washington College of Forestry in 1939. Professor Marckworth retired as Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus in 1965. He was a leader in the field of forestry education and published more than one hundred works on the subject. He also promoted public education in forestry through radio programs which were broadcast for more than five years.
