Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Eleanor Jarvis went as a child of seven to the Dixie Cotton Mission (St. George and vicinity) when her fmaily was called, among 300 other families, to begin the mission in 1861 for the LDS Church. In 1872, she married George Frederick Jarvis, who became a plasterer on the St. George temple.

The Eleanor C. W. Jarvis diary [typescript] (1936) describes her family life in Utah's Dixie area between the years 1854-1923. She describes learning to spin wool and cotton, the work surrounding building the St. George temple, the trials of her family during periods of the underground movement, her husband's mission call to England, and family visits, among other topics. This diary transcript was completed in 1937 by Lorin B. Spendlove of the Works Progress Administration, Historical Records Survey.
